A guide to choosing a hairstyle for attending a wedding

So, you’re attending a wedding and you need to choose a hairstyle. Whether you’re a plus one or the bride’s best friend, the hairstyle you wear to a wedding matters. Even though you’re not in the wedding party, you will be in photographs. Lots of photographs. In most cases, you won’t even know you’re having your picture taken. You need to choose a hairstyle that looks great from all angles and won’t come undone halfway through the ceremony.

What you should do

Natural hairstyles are always best. That doesn’t mean you should arrive at the venue with the hair you woke up with. It simply means your hairstyle needs to look natural. Even though you may have spent two hours perfecting the look, you don’t want people to know that. You want your hair to look effortlessly beautiful.

You should definitely make sure any scalp issues are covered. If you know that using certain products and blow drying your hair leaves you with dandruff, just don’t do it. Having the perfect hairstyle isn’t worth it if you have visible scalp flakes. However, you also don’t want to have a wet, itchy scalp. So, do what you know works. If you’ve had a scalp issue for a while, do what you usually do to cover it. You should also make sure you’ve used an anti-dandruff shampoo regularly for weeks leading up to the wedding.

Go for a hairstyle you’ve tried before and you know already looks good. You don’t want to try something new for the first time that morning and then find out it looks terrible. Make sure to practise the hairstyle you want at least twice before the event. It’s perfectly okay if you want to try out something different, just make sure you can do it properly before the big day.

What you shouldn’t do

Do not, under any circumstance, try to outdo the bride. This is not your big day and the attention should definitely not be on you. This means you should avoid hairstyles that are too extravagant. If you do decide to use hair accessories, make sure they are subtle. Whether flashy or elegant, leave the carefully-crafted hair accessories for the bride.

Avoid hairstyles that are too complicated. You may want a fancy updo but if it falls apart at the event, are you going to be able to fix it yourself? It’s highly unlikely you’ll find a hair stylist at the wedding willing to fix a guest’s hairdo in the bathroom while everyone else is enjoying the party. Keep it simple and make sure your hairstyle won’t be ruined while you’re out on the dancefloor.

The truth of the matter is that you want to look great but you also want to have fun and not worry about your hair during the event. If you take the above advice, you’ll find the perfect hairstyle for you.
